Description

QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold or be eligible to hold a valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate in Early Childhood or Elementary Education(P-5). Certification as Literacy Teacher, literacy coach or literacy specialist strongly encouraged. Minimum of 5 years successful elementary teaching experience. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and the Sumter Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

DESCRIPTION:

Assists with the development and implementation of English Language Arts curriculum and instruction for grades K-5 that is aligned with South Carolina’s learning standards for English Language Arts and with the South Carolina Profile of the Graduate.  Develops and implements a professional development program that Improves student achievement by promoting classroom instruction that encompasses appropriate content, pedagogy, technology, and assessment.  Collaborates with school and district instructional leadership to improve teaching and learning in Sumter School District. Collaborates with the Title I Director to ensure maximal benefits from Title 1 funding and programming.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Assists with the development and implementation of a comprehensive curriculum, instruction and formative assessment program for K-5th grade English Language Arts.
  1. Assists teachers and school leaders in organizing and implementing the English Language Arts curriculum for all students.
  1. Assists with and implements professional development for school-level curriculum and instruction support educators that builds capacity for improving teaching and learning.
  1. Assists with and implements professional development for teachers to improve teaching and learning in English language arts classes,
  1. Assists with and implements professional development focused on effective teaching and learning for students of poverty.
  1. Assists with and implements professional development related to culturally responsive instruction.
  1. Assists with the implementation professional development to improve the use of formative assessment and ongoing monitoring with effective feedback to improve learning.
  1. Assists the development and updates to the district reading plan.
  1. Assists with development and implementation of summer reading camps and assists with other summer English Language Arts student learning opportunities.
  1. Assists with the instructional programming and professional development for reading interventionists.
  1. Supports effective use of technology for teaching and learning in English Language Arts.
  1. Provides schools and teachers with guidance for using data to inform instruction.
  1. Stays well informed of instructionally-related state statutes. Monitors local school compliance and assists schools with compliance as needed.
  1. Assists with the development or selection of formative and/or interim assessments.
  1. Assists in the selection of instructional software and hardware that supports English Language Arts learning.
  1. Conducts school visits and provides useful feedback to school leadership and teachers.
  1. Meets with school-level curriculum support educators and teachers to interpret and help implement the District curriculum.
  1. Assists teachers in organizing curriculum and utilizing effective teaching strategies at the request of the principal.
  1. Provides consultation to beginning teachers as needed.
  1. Assists with the selection of the district’s elementary instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and textbooks.
  1. Assists district leadership in the evaluation of the instructional program, including interpreting assessment results and other data analysis to inform plans for instructional improvement and to focus professional development.
  1. Identifies ways in which the curriculum may be adjusted to meet the special learning needs of students.
  1. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledgeable of the South Carolina English Language Arts curriculum standards, the District’s overall English Language Arts curriculum goals, and the South Carolina Profile of a Graduate and experience with techniques to assist teachers and staff in reaching those goals • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups • Knowledge of instructional technology. Ability to organize programs, personnel, and activities required for productive learning in the school • Interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with administrators and staff • Ability to relate to a wide variety of people and to observe, listen, motivate, and provide leadership which results in the best environment • Ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues • Proven ability to make recommendations on various topics, detailed, controversial, simple, or complex • Ability to develop, monitor, and evaluate program goals and initiatives • Excellent organizational skills • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.

 

TERMS: 195 Days.  The Division of Personnel will establish salary and work year based upon the recommendation and approval by the Superintendent and the Sumter School District Board of Trustees.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in compliance with the Board’s policy on evaluation and professional personnel.
